Thank You for a Wonderful Semester! :)

Hello All,

I just wanted to thank you all VERY MUCH for a wonderful semester!  I know things were a little rough sometimes, but I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did!

A couple of things:

  • Final grades SHOULD be in CUNYFirst by now.  You need to log into the CUNYFirst system to check your grade.  Unfortunately, I cannot email final grades.
  • IF YOU RECEIVED AN INCOMPLETE, ONE OF THE FOLLOWING THINGS HAPPENED:
    1. We discussed it in advance
    2. You were missing a SUBSTANTIAL amount of work, most likely including the final paper
    3. There was a problem with your final paper
  • IF YOU RECEIVED AN INCOMPLETE, YOU MUST GET IN TOUCH WITH ME TO FIND OUT WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO COMPLETE THE COURSE AND RECEIVE A LETTER GRADE.
  • If you emailed me with questions, I will do my best to get back to you ASAP.

Again, thank you all SO much and please know that you are always more than welcome to get in touch with me for help with future English classes or with your college career in general!

Have an enjoyable and safe summer,

Prof. Jaime

🙂

Reminder About Submitting Final Work

Hello All,

This is just to remind everyone that, if you come by to turn in final assignments today and I am not in my office (I actually have a lot of running around to do so I will have to step out for some extended periods of time), LEAVE ALL WORK IN MY MAILBOX.  IT IS ONE OF THE LARGER MAILBOXES ON THE RIGHT-HAND WALL AS YOU ENTER THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT (N751), PARTIALLY BEHIND THE SECRETARY’S DESK, AND HAS MY NAME ON IT (JAIME WEIDA).

ALL FINAL WORK IS DUE BY 6 PM TONIGHT.

Just in case you are still confused about this semester’s assignments, CLICK HERE for a list of all take-home essays due this semester.

Best,

Prof. Jaime Weida

Update about Thursday’s (5/21) Office Hours

Hello All,

Earlier this evening I got an email with an announcement that one of my off-campus social justice groups is having a meeting Thursday night that I really do need to attend.  Therefore, I have to amend my office hours for tomorrow, Thursday 5/21.

  • 10:00 AM – 2:30 PM: I will be in an English department workshop in S341.  If you absolutely need to talk to me during this time, please knock softly on the door and I will step out into the hall.
  • 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM: I will be in my office (N751M)
  • After 5:30 PM: I will do my best to monitor my phone so I can respond to emails.

Please remember that you can turn in work in my mailbox if I am not in my office.

I will be in my office on Friday, May 22, from 3:00ish PM – 6:00 PM as previously announced.

Sorry for any inconvenience,

Prof. Jaime Weida

Another Sample Research Paper

Hello All,

CLICK HERE for a sample research paper to help you while writing your own.

Again, this is NOT on Shakespeare but is rather less advanced than the last one I posted.  Hopefully at least the format will be helpful to you.

Best,

Prof. Jaime Weida

ALL Take-Home Assignments for this Semester

Hello All,

Below is a list of (and links to) ALL take-home assignments we have had this semester.  I will accept ANY of these you are missing up to 6:00 on Friday May 22.

Remember that I said the MLA citations for the Shakespeare plays on the No Fear Shakespeare Sparknotes website are INCORRECT.  Here is the format for the CORRECT citations:

  • Shakespeare, William.  Name of Play John Crowther.  Sparknotes No Fear Shakespeare.  Sparknotes LLC.  2004.  Web.  Day month year you looked at it.

For example:

  • Shakespeare, William.  Much Ado About Nothing.  John Crowther.  Sparknotes No Fear Shakespeare.  Sparknotes LLC.  2004.  Web.  18 May 2015.

Also, CLICK HERE for a general guide on quoting from Shakespeare.

Best,

Prof. Jaime Weida

Final Exam Week Schedule

Hello All,

Please do not forget that ALL UNCOMPLETED WORK, INCLUDING THE FINAL PAPER, IS DUE BY FRIDAY MAY 22  at 6:00 PM IN ONE OF TWO WAYS:

  • Drop it off in my mailbox in the English department, N751 in the main building.  My mailbox has my name on it (Jaime Weida) and is one of the large ones on the left-hand wall near the secretary’s desk as you walk in.
  • Bring it to me in person when I am in my office (N751M inside the English department).
  • DO NOT EMAIL ANY FINAL WORK!!!!

I will be in my office (N751M) the following days this week:

  • Wednesday May 20: 3:00 – 7:30
  • Thursday May 21: 2:30 – 8:30
  • Friday May 22: 3:00(ish) – 6:00

If you come to turn in work and, for any reason, I am not there, just leave it in my mailbox!

Best,

Prof. Jaime Weida

Sample Research Paper

Hello All,

CLICK HERE for a sample research paper I wrote during my early graduate student years.  This is to help you with the format ONLY – I do NOT expect you to write a paper like this!  (Plus, it’s not a very good paper; it doesn’t really introduce any new ideas and depends WAY too much upon quotes.)

Hope this is helpful,

Prof. Jaime Weida

Why does English class and literature matter?

THIS is why.

O friend unseen, unborn, unknown,

Student of our sweet English tongue,

Read out my words at night, alone:

I was a poet, I was young.

Since I can never see your face,

And never shake you by the hand,

I send my soul through time and space

To greet you.  You will understand.

  • “To a Poet a Thousand Years Hence”

James Elroy Flecker (1914)

“The Tempest” Materials

Hello All,The

CLICK HERE for an article on The Tempest from the ever-popular Shakespeare for Students series.  Yes, you can use this as a research source for your final paper!

  • MLA Citation: “The Tempest.” Shakespeare for Students: Critical Interpretations of Shakespeare’s Plays and Poetry. Ed. Anne Marie Hacht. 2nd ed. Vol. 3. Detroit: Gale, 2007. 863-890. Gale Virtual Reference Library. Web. 6 May 2015.

The contemporary writer Neil Gaiman did a comic in his Sandman series of graphic novels about The Tempest.  In it, he imagines how William Shakespeare might have come to write this play.  While this is FICTION, Gaiman DID research the details of Shakespeare’s life and the historical period.  Click the picture of Neil Gaiman below for the PDF (please forgive the bad quality; this is a scan).

If you are not familiar with Neil Gaiman, you should be!  He has written some WONDERFUL graphic novels/comics, short stories, and prose novels.  If you have never read anything by him, I recommend starting with his first collection of short fiction, Smoke and Mirrors.  Click the cover below for the Amazon link to the book:

Enjoy,

Prof. Jaime Weida

🙂
